Two Huntington High School Students Score Big at the Texas FFA Convention

by Karolyn Klaes

Texas FFA is a dynamic youth organization that makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for excellent leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.

The organization holds an annual state-wide FFA Convention which celebrates the amazing accomplishments of members, teachers and the industry of agriculture. This year the organization celebrated it’s 90th year. From July 9-13 nearly 13,000 Texas FFA members and guests from across the state gathering together in Forth Worth to participate in this remarkable event.

The members of the agricultural youth leadership organization spent the entire week attending leadership workshops, participating in specialized events and activities, and being recognized for their achievements.

Additionally, more than 2,500 students were recognized for their accomplishments, with more than $2.3 million in scholarships being awarded. Attendees also participated in community service projects benefiting the city of Fort Worth throughout the week.

Huntington ISD had four students serve as Delegates this year. Adron Capps, Addison Dodd, Faith Ellis, and Cody Massey. This was an excellent experience for the Huntington students.

Two of Huntington’s students did exceptionally well at the convention this year. Mr. Weston Reynolds, a Senior at Huntington High School, received a Second Place in the category of “Sr. Prepared Public Speaking - Natural Resources”. And Miss Madison Gartmen, also a Senior at Huntington High, received a Third Place in “Sr. Prepared Public Speaking - Agricultural Policy”.

Weston Reynolds ended up earning the title of the 2017-2018 Texas FFA Sr Prepared Public Speaking Champion for the entire state. That is quite a major accomplishment. He will be traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana in October to compete in the 91st Annual National Competition.

Congratulations to all the FFA students who participated in this event. You are each going to be an important asset to this community. The memories you are creating and the lessons you are learning will last you a lifetime.

You all should be very proud of yourselves and remember, your school and this community is extremely proud of you too. Job well done!

It’s a great time to be a Huntington Red Devil!
