No doubt it’s hot in Texas, but Zavalla 4-H members are on fire competing in events across the state and nation this summer!

Zavalla 4-H members prepared and turned in their record books to the County Extension Office in mid-June. Rozalinn Runnels placed second at the county level with her rabbit record book. Valerie Runnels was first in county and 2nd in District with her clothing and textiles record book. Holden Boulware placed first in county and 2nd in district with his food and nutrition record book. Mackayla Hatton placed 1st in county and 1st in district with her horse record book. Completing a 4-H record book is tedious work, so congratulations to all who competed!

Rozalinn and Valerie Runnels participated in the Texas 4-H State Roundup in College Station, Texas. Valerie placed well in Agricultural Product Identification and Rozalinn placed well in the state food show Dairy division with her Mexican shrimp bisque, YUM! They both had a blast and represented Zavalla 4-H well.

On June 30th Zavalla 4-H members competed in the District 4 and 5 4-H Horse Show held in Athens, Texas. Elizabeth Carrell placed 2nd in the yearling gelding class and 7th in barrel racing. Dalton Moreno placed 3rd in 4 and under geldings. John Karson Flowers received overall Grand Champion gelding honors, as well as Grand Champion in the Yearling Filly Futurity. Justin Boulware was overall Reserve Champion gelding and also Grand Champion gelding in the Yearling Gelding Futurity.

On June 28th and 29th, John Karson Flowers and Justin Boulware exhibited their horses at the American Paint Horse Association World Championship Show in Fort Worth, Texas. John Karson Flowers placed 5th with his gelding and Justin Boulware placed sixth with his gelding.

On July 11th and 12th Dalton Moreno, John Karson Flowers, and Justin Boulware traveled to Tunica, Mississippi for the Palomino Horse Breeders Association World Championship Show. Dalton Moreno was Reserve World Champion in the yearling mare class and World Champion in the Jr Palomino Bred Gelding class. Dalton also placed sixth with his gelding in the Yellow Rose Futurity. John Karson Flowers placed 3rd in the 2 Year Old gelding class, 4th in the Yellow Rose Gelding Futurity and 6th in the Yellow Rose Mare Futurity. Justin Boulware was World Champion with his three-year-old mare and also placed third in the Yellow Rose Mare Futurity. He received World Championship honors with his yearling gelding and placed fifth in the Yellow Rose Gelding Futurity.

Zavalla 4-H members are looking forward to 4-H camp in August, finishing the summer show season, and kicking off the 2018-2019 4-H year on September 1st.

Our meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7pm in Mrs. Elizabeth Boulware’s room at Zavalla High School.
