Springtime is upon us! The sunshine and warmer weather is a welcome sight to 4-Hers who are gearing up for the annual county show. The Angelina County Fair is scheduled for April 15-20, 2019 at the George Henderson Expo Center in Lufkin. Zavalla 4-H will be well represented with projects in food and nutrition, arts and crafts, wood working, photography, lambs, goats, horses, and rabbits. The show begins with food and nutrition early in the week, livestock shows Wednesday through Saturday, and wraps up with the awards ceremony and auction on Saturday evening. We encourage everyone to come out to the fair and cheer the future leaders of this great nation on as they vie for the coveted blue ribbons.
In other club news, on March 12-14 John Karson Flowers, Justin and Jackson Boulware, and Makayla Hatton attended the world famous Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to exhibit their horses in the AQHA, APHA, and All-Breed Youth Horse Show.
Wednesday kicked off the American Paint Horse Association show where Justin Boulware placed 1st in Youth Mares with his yearling filly. He also placed 3rd in open yearling mares with her. Justin showed his yearling gelding and placed third in 2&Under geldings, while John Karson Flowers placed second in 2&Under geldings with his yearling gelding.
The horse show continued on Thursday with the AQHA and All-Breed classes. Makayla Hatton placed 5th in All Breed Mares. Jackson Boulware placed second in All Breed mares and second in the AQHA Aged Mare class. John Karson Flowers placed 2nd in AQHA yearling geldings, 3rd in all breed geldings, 1st in 2YO AQHA mares, and 2nd in All Breed Mares. Justin Boulware placed 1st in AQHA yearling geldings, 2nd in All Breed Geldings, 1st in AQHA yearling mares and 3rd in All Breed Mares.
All together, Zavalla 4-H members brought home 4 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo belt buckles and a ton of ribbons! It was a great show and our club was well represented.
The Zavalla Youth Fair Boosters is still accepting donations for the youth who compete at the Angelina County Fair. This organization rewards each Zavalla 4-H, FCCLA, & FFA member with a monetary award, as long as they complete a project and exhibit it at the ACF. No donation is too big or too small. Please contact Jimmy or Tara Boulware at 936-707-1271 for more information or a donation letter. You can also stop by HSB and make a donation to the ZYFB.
We hope to see you at the fair and always remember the 4-H motto “To Make the Best Better”
